Sock yarn—I used Moda Dea Sassy Stripes. Any self striping or patterned sock yarn will do.
Size 4 double pointed needles or size to get gauge (which is not as significant with this piece) gauge is 6 stitches & 8 rows for 1 inch square in stockinet stitch
Co 44 stitches, join, careful not to twist, put on marker
Knit 2 purl 2 ribbing for 4 rounds
Knit one round
Knit 11, yo repeat to end (this increases number of stitches to 48 and creates openings for the drawstring)
Knit each round until desired length is reached
Purl 3 rounds to make turn for base
Knit 6, k2tog repeat to end (42 stitches)
Knit 5, k2tog, repeat to end (36 stitches)
Knit 4, k2tog, repeat to end (30 stitches)
Knit 3, k2tog, repeat to end (24 stitches)
Knit 2, k2tog, repeat to end (18 stitches)
Knit 1, k2tog, repeat to end (12 stitches)
K2tog repeat to end (6 stitches)
Cut tail about 4 inches & pull through remaining 6 stitches
Drawstring—make I-cord out of 4 stitches to desired length
Weave through four holes. Tie knots in the ends and tie one knot to form a loop.

You are "a good knitter":-) you never cease to amaze me.
I have totally seen this water bottle cover around campus and wondered which knitter knitted it. Mystery solved!
Cool water bottle cover I think I'm going to do one for myself!
Have fun knitting!
That is too cool looking. What type of bottle did you use? Is it a standard water bottle sold in the stores?
